- Language Skills Evaluations (LSEs) are offered at all MDI centers, with the exception of our Berkley center at this time. Although this evaluation does not result in an official diagnosis of dyslexia, it will determine whether there are indications of dyslexia and whether specialized remedial reading instruction is appropriate. Results also help guide the instructional process.
- Speech and Language Evaluations (SLPs) for dyslexia are comprehensive assessments of language-based skills, including phonological awareness, decoding, and language processing. SLPs assess listening, speaking, reading, and writing to identify underlying weaknesses that contribute to reading difficulties. They can provide a diagnosis of dyslexia, which may be considered by schools as part of the educational planning process.
- A Comprehensive Educational Evaluation is a comprehensive, multi-layered assessment. It is conducted by an educational diagnostician specializing in dyslexia and other learning disabilities. It is used to assess a person’s language-processing skills and identify their specific learning strengths and weaknesses. These evaluations examine reading fluency, phonological processing, memory, and cognitive abilities. The results are used to determine if characteristics of dyslexia are present, rule out other contributing factors, and provide targeted recommendations. The results are highly valuable for educational planning and includes an extensive list of recommendations.
- Psycho-educational Evaluations for dyslexia are comprehensive, multi-layered assessments conducted by a qualified professional (e.g., an educational or school psychologist) to identify a student’s specific learning strengths and weaknesses. These evaluations typically examine reading fluency, phonological processing, memory, and cognitive abilities (IQ) to diagnose dyslexia, rule out other contributing factors, and provide targeted recommendations. The results can also be used by schools to inform educational planning, including eligibility and supports such as IEPs or 504 plans.
- Neuropsychological Evaluations (Neuropsych) for dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning disorders are conducted by a licensed medical professional. This type of evaluation can result in an official DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) diagnosis, which is necessary when you are trying to qualify for services at school or at work.
LSE Tests
- Language Skills Evaluation, Report Included – $650
This comprehensive evaluation assesses reading, writing, and comprehension using standardized, normed assessments. It is intended for struggling readers who have not yet been tested for dyslexia to determine if there are indications of dyslexia and whether specialized remedial reading, writing, or math instruction is appropriate. - Modified Language Skills Evaluation – $250 – $450
This condensed version of the Language Skills Evaluation is intended for individuals who have already been identified as having dyslexia. The evaluation determines the student’s current level of skill in reading, writing, and comprehension. It helps identify the current needs of the student and provides insight into developing a specialized remedial reading instruction plan for the student and as a baseline for measuring progress.
