Basic Orton Gillingham Training (Beginning DE Seminar)

The Michigan Dyslexia Institute is known for offering the gold standard of dyslexia training in the state of Michigan at an extremely affordable rate when compared to similar courses. We do this because at the core of our nonprofit is our mission to help as many dyslexics as possible. To do that, we want to train as many people as possible to help them using the top instructors in the state at the lowest rates in the state. This is made possible by the selflessness of those who choose to work at MDI.

This course is open to anyone.

Parents, teachers, educators, or anyone who may simply be interested in dyslexia.

Class fees will be reimbursed for those who tutor for MDI after adequately completing the course and practicum.

Our basic Orton-Gillingham training is formally known as the Beginning Decoding/Encoding Seminar is a 35 hour course (30 hour course + five 1-hour practicum sessions) which introduces the participants to the Orton-Gillingham Approach to teaching reading and writing skills to students with dyslexia.  In this course we will cover the following:

  • Dyslexia: definition, learning problems of individuals with dyslexia, and how to recognize the characteristics of dyslexia.
  • Understanding English:  history of the alphabet, the alphabet code, phonological and phonemic awareness, articulation of speech sounds
  • O-G Teaching:  using the Orton-Gillingham approach, multi-sensory teaching, explicit teaching decoding and encoding skills, syllable types, syllable division, spelling patterns and rules, writing lesson plans

Successful completion of the Seminar meets the AOGPE's application criteria for Subscriber Level membership and begins the process for completion of the Associate Level or Classroom Educator membership. Fees include $400 worth of materials and five supervised one-on-one sessions of practice teaching by a certified OG instructor or fellow. SCECHs and CEU credits are available. Details will be available the first day of class.
